This C+GA led study sought to develop a more humane, private, and secure alternative to the current shelter model for housing homeless families. The design consists of individual flexible micro-units that can be re-configured to be linked to additional bedrooms, allowing the size of the housing unit to be tailored to the size of the family. This fluid model is also able to respond to demand as needs change. A roof garden for the tenants, as well as community services including a daycare, classrooms, and training kitchen / restaurant have been provided at the lower floors. The flexible design is also developed as a model for similar residential facilities, such as student, short term and transitional housing.
C+GA is working with various groups to locate sites and implement this shelter design.
