The Active Brooklyn-Bedford Union Armory is a shortlisted design proposal that preserves and restores the original armory by transforming it into a community fitness center and community service space. The former Drill Hall will serve as a unified space with multiple recreational programs, as well as a home to a 50 meter pool. Adjacent to the armory are two 13 story buildings, providing a total of 149 homes including 79 affordable units, and multiple landscaped areas.
C+GA’s proposal, Active Bklyn, uses the armory as a center for physical fitness and activity and opens the facility up to public use as a state of the art fitness center as well as a hub of athletic programs that reach out into the community. Organizations such as Asphalt Green, Easy New York Restoration LDC and Bedford Grange Farms form the core of this adaptive reuse project that aims to attract community involvement and become a resource for the many residents and institutions of the surrounding areas.
