C+GA’s shortlisted response to an international design competition that transforms the former Bayview Correctional Facility to a welcoming, yet secure place, with a grand public stair inviting all to participate, and providing spaces for collaboration, healing and growth to enhance the lives of women and girls everywhere. Our proposal provides an architectural beacon of the global Women’s movement to the passerby, to the city and beyond. The design features a distinctive translucent, perforated metal skin that covers a new tower and is punctuated by extruded and recessed areas, finished in warm wood. When the metal skin reaches the historic façade of the former Mariner’s YMCA / Bayview Facility building it becomes a canvas for artwork. The complex program of the proposed building contains public theaters, meeting rooms, open office spaces and a health center, providing space that will foster and support non-profit and community organizations with common missions.
